Public transport company Arriva’s plans to run a night train service between Groningen and Maastricht and Schiphol Airport have been approved by the Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM).

New train routes to launch in the Netherlands in 2023

Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) might dominate the Dutch railways, but that could be about to change. NS’ biggest competitor, Arriva, already operates a number of public transport services in the Netherlands, and is looking to branch out.

Arriva has turned its attention to introducing additional train routes, and revealed plans to launch night train services between both Groningen and Maastricht and Schiphol Airport, as well as a service between Apeldoorn and Amersfoort. ACM announced this week that Arriva’s plans had been approved, with the trains set to launch in 2023.

The initial timetable shows that the services will mostly run over the weekends, with the train from Maastricht departing at 1 am, stopping in Eindhoven, Den Bosch, and Utrecht before arriving at Schiphol at 3.30 am.

Similarly, the service from Groningen will set off at 2 am, arriving at Schiphol after stops at Assen, Zwolle, and Almere. Trains between Apeldoorn and Amersfoort will run five times a day between 9 am and 1 pm.
