The number of attacks against the media in Serbia, including death threats against journalists, went up in 2019, according to an annual report published by the Council of Europe’s Platform to Promote the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists.

Inflammatory rhetoric often comes from government officials, says the “Hands off Press Freedom: Attacks on Media in Europe must not Become a new Normal” report issued on Wednesday (29 April).

The Council of Europe platform published 21 active warnings for Serbia by 31 December 2019, while the state only responded to four of the six new cases reported in 2019.

“One of the most serious intimidation cases was in February when the N1 television station received a letter whose author threatened to kill its journalists and their families, and to blow up the offices,” the report has warned, recalling that a 70-year man from Novi Pazar was sentenced to eight months in prison for those threats.
