Health is not merely the absence of disease, it is a state of physical, mental, social, and behavioral well-being. In his talk centered around this statement, Bill Walczak provides an insight into adopting a systemic approach to being healthy and dealing with healthcare systems. To understand how we are failing in two of the four components of what the WHO considers being in good health, Bill founded a community health center that holds after school activities, anti-violence workshops, adult education, and large spaces for people to gather and discuss well-being as a community. Bill Walczak is President & CEO of South End Community Health Center. He is founder of the Codman Square Health Center, a multi-service center where he was CEO from 1980- 2011. He is founding president of Codman Academy Charter School. Bill was a founder of the Edward Kennedy Health Careers Academy. From 2011-2012, he was President of Carney Hospital, and in 2013, he was a candidate for Mayor of Boston. Bill is a co-founder of DotWell, a partnership with the Dorchester House Multi-Service Center and the founding president of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. He is on the Executive Advisory Council for WBUR and is founding President of Boston HealthNet, a network of community health centers with Boston Medical Center. He served on Gov. Deval Patrick’s and Gov. Charlie Baker’s Health Care Transition Committee and on the New England Steering Committee for the Barack Obama presidential campaign. He is a Barr (Foundation) Fellow and has received numerous awards. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
